Use a small text for understanding, vocabulary and recall.
Choose a manageable text
Start with a paragraph about a familiar event. Read it once for the main idea before using a translation. If almost every sentence is unclear, choose an easier text or work with a bilingual version.
Keep only a few useful expressions
Underline two or three phrases you might use yourself. Look up their meanings and read the original paragraph again. Avoid turning every unfamiliar word into a card; a short, relevant list is easier to review.
Retell the idea
Close the text and say what happened in two sentences. Reopen it to check missing details, then write a new ending or replace a person or place. This gives the next reading a purpose beyond recognizing the same words.
